Happy Holidays!
As we approach New Year’s Eve and the annual City of Calgary New Year’s celebrations including fireworks off the top of the Calgary Tower and hosting along the surrounding roadways. I would like to share with you information that I received from City Administration as it relates to festival event traffic, parking and waste management control in and around downtown and above McHugh Bluff.
New Year’s Eve Event
Starting on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022, at 11:55 p.m., The City of Calgary will feature an eight-minute fireworks display from the top of the Calgary Tower. Calgarians are encouraged to watch the fireworks live or via livestream video by visiting www.calgary.ca/NYE.
Downtown Area
The City of Calgary’s New Year’s Eve planning and preparation efforts are focused in the downtown area where the majority of Calgarians traditionally gather to watch the fireworks. To support this event, additional infrastructure will be placed at Olympic Plaza including washrooms and waste and recycling bins. Additional Calgary Police and Corporate Security will be present and monitoring. Parking enforcement will be there to support any parking bans during the day. Evening Calgary Parking camera patrols will attend as needed and will be in contact with CPS to provide additional enforcement as/when required. For pedestrian and traffic safety during the fireworks, the following roads will be closed from 11:30 p.m. Dec. 31, 2022, to 12:15 a.m. Jan. 1, 2023:
• Centre Street S.E., from 6 Avenue S.E. to 9 Avenue S.E.
• 9 Avenue S.W., from 1 Street S.W. to 1 Street S.E.
• 9 Avenue S.W. sidewalk in front of the Calgary Tower
McHugh Bluff
In years past, City Administration has not seen large suburban gatherings that required traffic control measures, parking enforcement, and waste/recycling bins. However, parking enforcement will be there to support any parking bans during the day and especially in the evening between 2100-0130 hrs. festival period. Evening Calgary Parking camera patrols will attend as needed and will be in contact with CPS to provide additional enforcement as/when required.
It is anticipated that roads and pathways will be in great condition at this time, with no snow in the forecast during the week of Dec. 26, as well as above average seasonal temperatures. On Dec. 27, The City conducted a road condition review of Crescent Road N.W. and scheduled snow removal accordingly. In addition, Mobility maintenance crews will assess on Dec. 31 to ensure the roadway is well serviced, and all signs are checked. There are no planned closures or detours on or adjacent to Crescent Road during this event.
Thank you to Cllr. Terry Wong and his office for forwarding the above information.
The City of Calgary also has a web page dedicated to New Year’s Eve. You can review it here.
